Born to Run
A cheetah takes to the heights of a fig tree to survey for prey. Unlike most African predators, cheetahs hunt during the daytime. When they spot prey, they can accelerate faster than most cars: from 0 to 60 miles (96 kilometers) an hour in only 3 seconds. |

A Volcano’s Handiwork
In a land sculpted by volcanoes and ice, a moss-covered lava field undulates to the horizon in Vik, Iceland’s southern most village, famous for its black basalt sand beach. Vik lies beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, itself atop of the Katla volcano, dormant since 1918.

Laser focus
A close-up of an iguana’s eye may hint at the animal’s excellent vision, which can detect shapes and motions at great distances. The species, native to Central and South America and the Caribbean, can come in different colors, depending upon their range.

Love Match
Mandarin ducks huddle on a frozen lake. In traditional Chinese culture, these brilliantly colorful ducks are believed to be lifelong couples, and they feature frequently in art as a symbol of conjugal fidelity.
